Henri Matisse was a French painter who lived from 1869-1954. He is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th Century. As a young man, he studied law and passed the bar in 1888 and began a law practice. However, one year later, he suffered an attack of appendicitis, and while recovering he started making art with art supplies that his mother bought for him. Two years later he started studying art and was a student of both William Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. In 1904 Matisse met Pablo Picasso, and the two became life-long friends as well as artistic rivals.
