This sculpture is from the mid-to-late 19th Century, and from the Fang culture in Gabon, Africa. The sculptural head was once inserted into the top of a box made of bark which held the bones of revered ancestors. The box would be kept in the corner of the bedroom and was believed to provide spiritual power and wisdom to the living.
