I received an email from a reader of the blog who sent the following pictures of some Native American sand art that he has in his possession. He explained, “I don’t know how old they are, my father-in-law collected some Navajo Sand Art, and I inherited them when he passed. He had them for over 20 years.” He was hoping Artsology could give him more information on these pieces, but I had to admit that while I have a basic understanding of sand art, I’m not an expert in these things as far as giving any sort of formal analysis of what he has. I did say that I would share the pictures, and if anyone out there has any experience or scholarly information on Native American Navajo Sand Art, we hope that someone will share what they know in the comments section below. Here’s a second painting, below left, along with a detail below right from the piece above. I thought I would include the detail view to give a closer look at the figures. It’s a little hard to tell from these pictures, but the gentleman confirmed that both the figures and the background are all sand.
