Grim cowboys, happy horses

I saw this book cover art at an antiques mall in Cold Spring, NY, and the first reaction I had was: those are some grim cowboys, but some happy horses. Is it just me, or do those horses look like they’re smiling? Especially the one on the right?

I’m trying to find out a little more about this book and the cover art; what I found so far is that the author “Nicholas Carter” who provides the real name on the cover, John R. Coryell, lived from 1848–1924. “Nick Carter” is a fictional character who began as a dime novel private detective in 1886 and has appeared in a variety of formats over more than a century, with the suggestion that this particular edition is from the 1920s. I can’t find anything about the artist, although I do see a “W. Bob” notation in the bottom right corner … does anyone know who this artist is? I can’t find anything online. If you know, please share your info in the comments section below.
