Yayoi Kusama robot in NYC

Yayoi Kusama robot in NYC

I just saw something today where there’s a life-sized Yayoi Kusama robot mimicking the act of painting dots in the window of the Louis Vuitton store on Fifth Avenue in NYC. Check out this video – the movements seem robot-like, but check out the face and skin! What?!? Look at the facial expressions – how is this possible? I’m trying to find out more information on who made the robot or the specs on it, I think I’m going to have to go into NYC to see this for myself. Scroll down below the video for more information …

This robot and store display is to promote a new partnership between the famous Japanese artist and the luxury goods brand Louis Vuitton. From what I can gather so far, Louis Vuitton has produced more than 450 different Kusama-inspired pieces including bags, fragrances and more. Here is a link on the Louis Vuitton site which shows more of the offerings launched with this fashion line.

One cool anecdote I found says that “… Louis Vuitton’s craftspeople developed a special technique to make some of the 3D paint daubs look ‘wet,’ as if they had just been painted by Kusama’s hand.”

I’m still looking for info on the robot, though … if anyone has any info or links to share, please do so in the comments section below.
