NJPAC’s City Verses and the Institute of Jazz Studies invites the public to close out a season full of virtual events, with a celebratory, in-person jazz and poetry performance at Clement’s Place in Newark on June 26, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM.

NJPAC’s director of jazz instruction, Mark Gross and his quartet will be joined by special guest, poets from Newark, and affiliated with the City Verses program, Margie “Mia X” Johnson, Treasure Borde (EvoluCulture), Attorious Renee Augustin (MFA ’22; Rutgers University-Newark).

Refreshments will be served and admission is free, but one must RSVP here, as space will be limited.

More on Mark Gross: Mark Gross swings and sings in today‚Äôs Jazz vanguard. Gross is constantly pushing the music forward while staying true to the classic elements of Jazz, and he credits his prolific sound to the rich appreciation for Gospel music that resounded through his parent’s home in Baltimore, Maryland.

Gross has toured the world for over 30 years with Delfeayo Marsalis, Dave Holland, Mulgrew Miller, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, James Moody, Nancy Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Heath, John Lee, Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Charles Mingus Big Band, Cyrus Chestnut, Regina Carter, Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Cobb, and many others. Mark Gross has recorded on over a hundred Jazz recordings, and has released four CDs as a leader: Preach Daddy on King Records, Riddle of the Sphinx on J Curve Records, Blackside on Jazz Legacy Productions (JLP), and + Strings on MGQ Records.

Currently Mark is the Director of Jazz Instruction at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, professor at Prins Claus Conservatoire in Groningen, Holland, and part-time lecturer at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts. See more on his website here.
