Spring Break in the Fall

Between the coronavirus pandemic interrupting art fairs last year and into this year, and a shift in thinking as far as timing, it seems many of the art fairs that used to take place in the spring each year are now happening in the fall. One such show, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, did not include a name change despite opening for previews yesterday. The show takes place at 625 Madison Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in NYC and opens to the general public 11am – 8pm each day from September 10 – 13.

I received a press release for one of the curatorial exhibitions that will take place at SPRING/BREAK: “Nothing’s Shocking,” an exhibition co-curated by Chris Bors and Fred Fleisher. This group show features work by Chris Bors, Huey Crowley, Kim Darling, Fred Fleisher, Dawn Frasch, Brian Leo, Rebecca Morgan, and Emily Oliveira, and will be in booth #1153. The press release reads:

In Nothing’s Shocking the arresting visuals of eight artists coalesce into an irascible visual tumbleweed of painting, sculpture and textiles at odds with decorum and which revel in content that is considered outrĂ©, vulgar or lowbrow. Titled after the debut studio album by Jane’s Addiction, this work goes against the grain aesthetically and conceptually. The artists are a misfit mix of individualists unafraid to stand out. The work is more akin to the Chicago Imagists like The Hairy Who then the “too cool for school” New York School. Featuring post-pop art, found objects, ceramics and quilting, to painting both off-the-cuff and considered, the personal becomes political, with work that resists trends and takes chances.

Below are three works from the exhibition: at left, “Absolem Trickster,” 2020, by Fred Fleisher, and at right top, “Baby Yoda Researching,” 2020, and at right bottom, “Eagle Resting,” 2020, both by Brian Leo.
