Louis Estape Outsider Artist

It’s a little difficult to find much information on the artist Louis Estape, but here’s what I can come up with: he was born in 1938 in Honduras, and immigrated to the United States in 1946 when he was eight years old, settling in California.

As far as his art-making experience, it seems he didn’t start in earnest until around 1985, when he was 47 years old, and began spending time at the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, a facility for artists with physical, mental and developmental disabilities. It’s not clear to me what his disabilities were, but the staff at Creative Growth have the mission to teach that art and art-making is fundamental to human expression and that all people are entitled to use art as a tool of communication. Estape did exactly that, and over the years he created an extensive body of art that reflected his Honduran heritage, his home and friends, as well as his religious beliefs.
