Fall 2019 Open House at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City

I’ve been aware of the existence of Mana Contemporary in Jersey City for years, but for some reason I had never made it over there before this past weekend. Part of the reason is that visitation is generally only possible if one goes on a time-specific tour, but this past weekend was their Fall 2019 Open House, in which access was wide open and included a number of events and exhibitions in addition to the open studios for individual artists. What a fantastic time! There was so much to see, as this arts organization is located within a vast 1920s former tobacco warehouse with multiple floors that will “… eventually encompass a footprint of more than two million square feet” …! You can see an exterior view below:

One of the events/exhibitions on view yesterday was “Mana Decentralized,” pictured below, which offered a view of selected artists from the vast collection of artist studios throughout the building in a gallery setting with works for sale. While this was the more-formal presentation of work for sale, one could certainly inquire about prices and buying directly from artists while wandering through the building and dropping into any of the open studios there.

I’ll have more coverage from this event soon – please check back to the blog for further art studio highlights from my day. The fall event took place for just one day – yesterday, September 15th – but there are more opportunities to visit – check the info for Jersey City here. There are also Mana Contemporary satellites in Chicago and Miami. As far as the next Open House in Jersey City, it’s not currently posted on the site, but it looks like they’ve had them in the spring in the past as well … so I will post it here if and when I find out about the Spring 2020 version.
