A noticed this church as I was walking down Summit Avenue in Jersey City recently, and stopped to take some pictures as I found the stained glass window to be intriguing. The view of Jesus with his arms raised made me think of any number of art historical “Ascension” paintings, such as this one painted by Rembrandt in 1636.
The church, which is part of the Christian Reformed Church, appears to have several names: The Jersey City Mission Church; The Iglesia Cristiana Reformada Mision of Jersey City; The Filipino Christian Reformed Church; and The First Filipino-American Wesleyan Church, among others. However, despite all of these names, I’m having a hard time finding any historical information online, such as how old this church is, when it was built, who might have created the stained glass window, etc. The one URL that I found related to this church prompted a login without any public information, so I didn’t get far in my mission to learn more. If you have any info about the history of this building, please share with us in the comments section below.
