Morley Safer and 60 Minutes did a piece on the contemporary art world last night, with coverage and interviews coming from the Miami Art Basel Fair. On the one hand, the story does focus on some of the more-outrageous and far out art that was being displayed in order to encourage disdain, but the truth is that these things do exist, even if they aren’t the majority of what is being shown in the art world. One segment that I found especially interesting was the brutal honesty of art dealer Tim Blum, of Los Angeles-based gallery Blum & Poe. He chuckles several times in explaining how he sells to the extremely rich and their reasons for buying art.
