Dramatic, larger-than-life sports photography

When I was at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit last week (also known as the Detroit Auto Show), the event took place at the Joe Louis Arena. Within the arena, they had a hallway where they featured pictures of athletes as part of the “Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.” I especially liked this vintage photograph of Vincent Banonis, who played at the University of Detroit from 1939-1941.

It appears that the photographer must have shot the picture at night, and went to the trouble of hiding a light source behind the football, aimed up at Banonis. It makes for a pretty dramatic effect, don’t you think?
