3-D? No, 2-D, but amazing … art by Peeta

I was browsing Behance.net in their section of street art, and saw some amazing 3-D looking murals by an artist named Peeta, who is based in Venice, Italy. His website explains that he is a member of the EAD crew (Padova, Italy), FX and RWK crews (New York City) and has participated in graffiti jams and Meeting of Styles events in Europe and the Americas. Sounds pretty cool to me, living in Venice and flying to New York to do graffiti … see his piece in Rochester, New York below:

But then I started looking at Peeta’s work on canvas, and came across this beauty, below. It’s titled Future Ex-Wife and is mixed media on canvas measuring approximately 39×78 inches. The more I looked at it, I really started to wonder if it was 3-D … the fact that it is “mixed media” made me wonder if there were some sculptural elements that made it really 3-D, but when I contacted the artist to ask, he replied “it’s a 2D canvas painted to have the appearance of 3D.” It’s pretty convincing, I’d say, and something I would love to hang on my wall – certainly much more than the soap rack I was talking about yesterday!
